Heritage Tourism in Cyprus 2014 – Archie Waters

cyprus-aw1Report on the Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Tourism Study Visit – Cyprus, April 19Introduction: The objectives of the Cultural Heritage Interpretation and Sustainable Tourism (CHIST) visit to Cyprus – 19th to 26th April 2014 – were to examine elements of the cultural heritage tourism of the island and reflect on these bearing relevance to Scottish tourism. The aim was to return with knowledge that could be disseminated to others working in the tourism industry so that Scottish cultural and heritage tourism will be better protected, promoted and delivered to a higher standard than before. The CHIST visit was funded by the ‘Leonardo da Vinci’ Vetpro (Vocational Education Training for Professionals) programme of the European Commission (DG EAC) Directorate and promoted by the ARCH Trainer Exchange.cyprus-aw2-craft It included study visits to heritage tourism related industry venues, field and bush studies, craft workshops, visits to cultural sites and attendance at local cultural events. It was led by Martin Clark who acted as guide and host in Cyprus, ably assisted by Panayota Demetrius a resident of Kato Drys. As well as passing on copious amounts of information, Martin engaged the group members in analytical and observational discussions.
cyprus-aw3-lace Location: The group’s accommodation was within the mountain village of Kato Drys, a small but aspirant township in the Lefkara region. Kato Drys is known for its interest in traditional sustainable foodstuffs and as the birthplace of the UK restaurant magnate, Sir Rio Stakis.

Report on the Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Tourism Study Visit – Cyprus, April 19The group’s rooms were contained within a set of renovated traditional houses. However, whereas the exterior had been maintained – as planning regulations now dictate – in the old traditional style, the interiors had been refurbished to a very high standard with contemporary fittings and facilities able to meet the most exacting expectations of any visitor. Encouraging property developers to provide such high quality accommodation is a deliberate policy with the Community Council so as to encourage visitors to stay in the village proper.

Go to: "germany-tourism.de/cycling" (exclude quotations) for extensive info and maps of bicycle routes in Germany. You can do long and shot distance routes. Routes which are along rivers are most scenic. Are you going with the Study Abroad program? I am, and I'm bringing my bike to do extensive long distance biking. Here's a link: "germany-tourism.de/pdf/adfc/eng/route_baden_wuerttemberg.pdf" (exclude quotations) to a brochure specifically on Baden-Wuerttemberg. If your destination is elsewhere then you can simply click 'Order Brochure' on the first web link to see all the other routes in Germany in PDF format
