Weimar has the best international university in Germany

(© dpa // picture alliance) The Bauhaus University in Weimar, Thuringia, describes itself as being eager to experiment, open and creative, and it seeks proximity to industrial practice. But now, it can also boast the title of “best international university 2011” in Germany. This year the university came first in the “international university” competition. The Stifterverband (Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) make the award each year. This sign of distinction goes to German universities which are convincingly international in practice and represent excellent examples within the university landscape. The motto for the 2011 award, which is worth 50, 000 euros, was “The international dimension of teaching”.

The winning university convinced the judges with its pronounced international approach: 60 per cent of the German students go abroad; 15 per cent of the students and nine per cent of the teachers come from abroad; 40 per cent of course lectures and seminars are held in a foreign language. The jury was particularly impressed by the university’s inventiveness in creating new formats and promoting intercultural communication. One of the special strengths in this area, apart from forms of artistic expression, lies in the advanced application of new media. In the final round of the competition the Bauhaus University Weimar came top against Bremen University, Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus, Göttingen University and Saarland University. The five candidates for the 2011 award had been selected from 28 entrants by a jury of university teachers and university managers.
